Nokia claims Apple iPad, iPhone infringe its patentsMarking the third legal action Nokia has taken against Apple since October, Nokia alleges the iPhone and iPad 3G infringe five of its patents.By Suzanne Deffree, Managing editor, news -- EDN, 5/7/2010

Nokia today filed a complaint against Apple with the Federal District Court in the Western District of Wisconsin, alleging that Apple iPhone and iPad 3G products infringe five of its patents.

Nokia did not detail the patents in question, only saying they “relate to technologies for enhanced speech and data transmission, using positioning data in applications and innovations in antenna configurations that improve performance and save space, allowing smaller and more compact devices,” and that the patents are important to the company’s success.

Today’s filing follows allegations made in October 2009, in which the Finland-based company claimed the iPhone infringed 10 of its patents for GSM, UMTS, and WLAN standards. Then in December 2009, Nokia filed a complaint with the United States International Trade Commission alleging that Apple infringes Nokia patents in virtually all of its mobile phones, portable music players, and computers.

"Nokia has been the leading developer of many key technologies in mobile devices" said Paul Melin, general manager of patent licensing at Nokia, in a statement today. "We have taken this step to protect the results of our pioneering development and to put an end to continued unlawful use of Nokia's innovation."

According to Nokia, it has invested (40 billion Euro) over the last two decades in research and development, compiling more than 11,000 patent families.

As of press time, Apple had not released a statement on the suit

My Special Friend

Your cheerful smile
Your caressing hand
It's the really simple things
That make your life look so grand

You're a special woman
It's in your eyes
I see the truth
There is no disguise

It's your spirit
Maybe your soul
But my life without you
Would feel painfully old

You've been a true friend
I hope you stay
I would be so very empty
If you ever went away.

World's Shortest Man Meets Leggiest Woman

The Guinness Book of World Records held an event yesterday in Trafalgar Square to celebrate the release of the 2009 edition. Among the attendees were Svetlana Pankratova, world's leggiest woman (at 52"), and He Pingping, the world's shortest man (at 2' 5.37"). As you can see, the photoshoot gave He the perfect opportunity to score a worm's eye view of Svetlana's love nest. Nice He, but if I was you I would have climbed one of those legs and built a treehouse.

If the shoe fits: World's shortest man meets world's biggest shoe

The world's shortest man He Ping Ping took Tokyo by storm while visiting the city on Friday to launch the 2009 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records.

Mr Ping Ping, who was born with a form of dwarfism and is 74.1 cm tall and 7kg in weight, easily slipped into the shoe of the world's tallest man. He has been officially named by the book as the world's shortest man.

He lives in Inner Mongolia, China, and Tokyo is just one of many places around the world he has visited, including London and New York.

Friends: Mr Ping Ping meeting with Bao Xishun in 2007. Mr Xishun was once the world's tallest man

What Is Friendship?

It is an in-depth relationship combining trust, support, communication, loyalty, understanding, empathy, and intimacy.

These are certainly aspects of life that all of us crave.

Being able to trust and relax with your friend is a big part of friendship.

Remember when you were young and went with a friend to her grandma's for the week-end. It was fun but when you got home, home was wonderful. Your feeling was "I'm home. I can relax now."

That's what a friendship should be.

You go out into the world and do your best. You have your ups and downs, your problems and triumphs, your fun and tribulations. You charm and you perform.

Then you come "home" to a friend. You can relax, put up your feet; you are relieved. If you still have to be charming and/or performing, it's not a relief.

Friendship is a comfy situation like home. You get home, kick off your shoes, relax and sigh, "Ahh, home."

Being able to trust and relax with your best friend is a big part of friendship. Friendships are relationships.

Computer System Components

Input/output Controllers

Input/output controllers receive input and output requests from the central processor, and then send device-specific control signals to the device they control. They also manage the data flow to and from the device. This frees the central processor from involvment with the details of controlling each device. I/O controllers are needed only for those I/O devices that are part of the system.

Main Memory

kilobyte: 210 = 1024 bytes
megabyte: 220 = 1024 kilobytes
gigabyte: 230 = 1024 megabytes
terabyte: 240 = 1024 gigabytes

Addresses

Each byte of main storage has an address. Most modern processors use 32-bit addresses, so there are 232 possible addresses. Think of main storage as if it were an array:

byte[0x00000000 ... 0xFFFFFFFF] mainStorage;

A main storage address is an index into memory. A 32-bit address is the address of a single byte. Thirty-two wires of the bus contain an address (there are many more bus wires for timing and control).

Virtual Memory

Cache Memory

Disk access is slow compared to RAM access. Potentially, using a combination of real memory and disk memory to implement the address space could greatly slow down program execution. However, with clever electronics and a good operating system, virtual memory is only slightly slower than physical memory.

Computer systems also have cache memory.

Contents of Memory

The memory system merely stores bit patterns. That some of these patterns represent integers, that some represent characters, and that some represent instructions (and so on) is of no concern to the electronics. How these patterns are used depends on the programs that use them.

You have reached the end this chapter. Test your memory by clicking on a topic to jump to the page where it is discussed.

Monterrey, Mexico, Manuel Uribe, who once weighed 1,235 punds, has lost more than 500 pounds, thanks to an international team of doctors led by Dr. Barry Sears, creator of the Zone Diet. Setting a new world record for the most weight lost.

He weighed 717 pounds (324 kg) in May after losing 518 pounds (235 kg) since March 2006 on a diet of grapefruits, egg-white omelets, fish, chicken and vegetables. Uribe has also added a new goal to his weight-loss plans, he wants to be able to stand up for his wedding in the coming year.

His wish is simple to be able to stand on his own when he marries girlfriend Claudia Solis. He said: “It frustrates me a little, because it is not easy to get out. We are in love, and this year my birthday wish is to be able to stand when we get married,”

Its been four years since the couple met four years ago and now they have been together for the last two years.

California Driving: Road Rules & Driving Laws

California's road rules and driving laws are well-summarized in The California Driver's Handbook, also available in booklet form from the California Department of Motor Vehicles (the DMV) at any DMV office or the head office in Sacramento. You can also browse the full California Vehicle Code (CVC) under the state's official California Code Web Page.

Please do not rely on me or this Guide for legal advice; what follows is a brief informal summary that may be out of date and / or incomplete, or even entirely wrong — there's no excuse for not doing your own homework on this! And please don't ask me for legal advice or advice on getting around the law or whatever: I'm not a lawyer, or even particularly intimate with Californian law.

Road Rules

There are a few points that might confuse or surprise the visitor; the following relies heavily on that book and my own personal experience:

* Motorcyclists must wear approved helmets while on the road; motorcyles can legally split lanes.

* The driver and all passengers must wear seat belts(or be in approved child-restraint holders — see below).

* All children under the age of 6 or under 60lbs (about 27 Kg) weight must be in approved child-restraint seats or holders.

* DUI — driving under the influence of alcohol — is a serious offense in California, with criminal penalties and drastic consequences. The blood alcohol limit is 0.08%, but you can also be charged regardless of blood alcohol amount if the police can prove you were affected by the alcohol. (And remember, regardless of DUI offences, in the US the legal drinking age is 21).

* Right turn on red — in most cases, it is legal to make a right turn at an intersection even against a red light. This is not universal, and exceptions are always signed — but note that the exception signs are often tiny things in hard-to-see places.

If you are turning right and the light is red, you are supposed to stop at the intersection before turning, then turn when you're sure there's no other traffic (through traffic, and traffic entering the intersection on green or yellow lights, have right of way). Many Californians don't quite stop, but it's still a good idea, particularly if you're used to driving on the "wrong" side of the road.

* Passing — it's quite legal to pass ("overtake") on the inside (i.e. to the right), as long as it's safe and in a properly-marked lane (i.e. only do this on multi-lane freeways and highways). Passing on the inside is pretty essential given the lack of lane discipline in California.

* Four-way stop signs — many four-way intersections have stop signs on all sides of the intersection. This sounds like a recipe for deadlock, but the rules for who gives way to whom are pretty easy. In general, you take turns to go through the intersection in the order at which you got to the edge of the intersection. If two or more of you got there at the same time, the ordering is clock-wise (i.e. the driver to your right goes first). This scheme isn't fool-proof (I still don't know what you're supposed to do when four cars get there at exactly the same time...) so keep a tight watch.

* U-turns — U-turns are generally allowed at intersections except where explicitly not allowed (usually with a big sign saying "U Turns Prohibited"). You make the u-turn from the normal left turn lane, if it exists; at intersections controlled by traffic lights, you will normally only be able to make u-turns on the green arrow or similar. U-turns on busy streets or in business areas are generally not allowed except at intersections; in most other cases, you can make a u-turn with appropriate care, unless the street has a solid yellow line down the middle, or visibility is obstructed by terrain or turns. U-turns are of course strictly forbidden on freeways and most highways.

* School buses — when you come to a school bus stopped on either side of a road with the bus's red lights flashing, you must stop, and remain stopped as long as the red lights are flashing. These laws are strictly enforced in some places, not in others (e.g. in large parts of Berkeley you'll be roundly abused by drivers behind you if you stop for a school buses, as I quickly learned...).

Californian school buses are immediately recognizable — they're the same as elsewhere in the US, i.e. special yellow buses clearly marked "School Bus" on the front and rear (at least). If you're a foreigner you've probably seen them on TV or in the movies — they're an inescapable part of life here. The flashing red lights on the bus mean that children are getting on or off the bus and are likely to try to cross the road near the bus.

Speed Limits

The most important speed limits you need to know about here are the two "default" limits, 25 M.P.H. (40 K.P.H.) and 55 M.P.H. (90 K.P.H.), for suburban and city roads, and for freeways or highways, respectively. Although limits vary around these figures (e.g. 30 or 35 M.P.H. (roughly 50 and 60 K.P.H. respectively) on some large city streets, 65 or 70 M.P.H. (100 and 110 K.P.H.) on many freeways), if no limit is posted, you should assume one or other of these two speeds. Speed limits signs (black lettering on a rectangular white background) are usually posted at regular intervals along freeways, highways, and other major roads.

No one ever seems to observe the limits strictly; not even the police (except when revenue is getting low). In general, it seems that 30 M.P.H. is the norm for 25 M.P.H. areas, 60-65 M.P.H. for 55 M.P.H. freeways, and 70 M.P.H. for 65 M.P.H. roads, etc.; the police generally don't seem to worry about this sort of speeding (but don't count on it — enforcement has been tightened up a bit since the freeway speed limits were raised from 55 M.P.H., and there are places like Alameda where even a couple of MPH's over the limit can get you a ticket).

safe, small and smart.

smart USA is all about keeping our drivers safe. Our engineers worked hard to build a massive amount of advanced safety systems into the smart fortwo's small frame. But when people buy cars, the engineering-speak and statistics show only half of the picture – the real stories are about how a person was protected by her vehicle or, even better, how someone avoided an accident altogether with the nimbleness of his small car.

That’s what this website is all about — a place for smart owners to share their safety stories, and tell how good things like the smart fortwo come in small packages.

So come on in and tell your story. Read about others. In the end, safe and small can not only coexist, but live in harmony – and that’s just smart.

Transport system in USA

First of all cars in the US are far more cheaper than anywhere in the world. Gas prices in the US, even with the current rising prices are only half of most of the European countries. The income level is higher than in most of the countries, so anyone can afford a car. For a few hundred dollars you can buy a workable car which will take you from one coast to another. America is a quite agressive country. It looks nice and well regulated from the surface, but it can be very brutal.

There is a lot of agreessivity in the TV and in the news. Because of the high level of crime in some regions police is trained well, and if someone does not obey them situations go very easily out of control into the extreme. Because of the agressivity in the media (and I guess in real life too, sometimes) pople in America are reluctant to stop and take strangers from the road. I wouldn't stop myself in most cases. I reall one single case in the last 2 years when someone tried to stop me to pick him up from the entrance of the freeway.

So my advice to you if you are coming to visit America is this: don't plan to hitchhike. People don't use to do this here, plus it's about your personal safety as well. You don't know who is the person who picks you up.

Instead of hitchhiking rent a car. For about $50 a day with insurance and tax included you can go whereever you want to go. If 4-5 people share a rental car, it will be really cheap and you can see America in a more civilized manner.

Greyhound Bus Lines

Greyhound is the name of the long-range bus service in the US. It is the cheapest transportation service in the US. And according to the price level the quality of people who ride the Greyhound is usually low. Or better said there is always a low class on the Greyhound buses, and in many cases vicinity of the Greyhound bus stations is are very unsafe from public safety viewpoint. Check for e.g. downtown Atlanta and you will see what I am talking about.

Shortly said: if there is not absolutely necessary, if you can find other ways to travel, don't ride the Greyhound. I have first hand experience riding it, and if possible I am avoiding it. Based on my experience the bus drivers are in most cases unfriendly, the public safety on the bus is questionable, and the long ride si exhausting. Imagine riding the bus for 3-4 days and night going from one coast to another, with 1-2 hrs stops a few times a day. It's not fun. Try instead the train, Amtrak, it's much refreshing.

But if you don't have other choices, then use Greyhound as a last resort. The only good thing about it is that it is cheap.

Amtrak Train Service

The Amtrak Rail Service offers a higher quality service then Greyhound. Thus it will cost you more. You might consider the airplane as an alternative. Sometimes you can get really good deals on flights (e.g. coast to coast flights, roundtrip Los Angeles - Florida $150-200 or lower with last minute trips, which is cheaper than Amtrak). But riding the train is fun. You can see lot more than from the plane. So if you have the time and want to see America then Amtrak can be an option.

A short time ago was Amtrak on the news headlines again. The company is deficitary and needed a $200 million funding from the government to stop working. Yes, Amtrak was at a step from bankrupcy and from final stop. But thanks to the government Amtrak is still running.

Flying

This is really popular in the US. There are tens or hundreds of thousands of people who are flying daily. It is the fastest way to travel and sometimes it might be the most economical one, especially on longer distances. Thus is not uncommon that with less than $200 you can fly roundtrip coast to coast.

Another very good option to fly are the last minute deals. When airplanes can't sell all the tickets for a flight, instead of flying half emplty, they offer last-minute-trips right before the flight. This means for about $50 you can fly with the flight to the destination. If you have to be somewhere in time than don't count on the last minute deals. Yuo never know when you find last minute deals. You can try your luck, but don't count on this.

Recently some internet companies started to advertise last-minute deals. Not only flights, but complete last minute packages, flight with lodging. You can get incredible deals on the internet. Just to give you an example with my wife we got an e-mail one afternoon about a few destinations for the upcoming weekend. We picked up a San Francisco weekend trip, Los Angeles - San Francisco roundtrip flight, including 3 nights in Crown Plaza, a very nice hotel, all for about $170 per person. We decided from a day to another that we want to go and we spent 3 beautiful days in the scenic San Francisco and Napa Valley. The best places to look for such last-minute deals are Orbitz, Expedia and Priceline. You can subscribe to their mailing lists and they send you weekly the last-minute deals right into your mailbox.

Herschel Gets Sneak Peak at Star Birth

 http://nasa-satellites.blogspot.com/2010/05/herschel-gets-sneak-peak-at-star-birth_06.html
The first scientific results from the Herschel infrared space observatory are revealing previously hidden details of star formation. New images show thousands of distant galaxies furiously building stars and beautiful star-forming clouds draped across our Milky Way galaxy. One picture even catches an "impossible" star in the act of formation.

Presented today during a major scientific symposium held at the European Space Agency in the Netherlands, the results challenge old ideas of star birth, and open new roads for future research. The mission is led by the European Space Agency with important participation from NASA.

"Herschel is a new eye on a part of the cosmos that has been dark and buried for a long time," said the mission's NASA project scientist, Paul Goldsmith, at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

Herschel's observation of the star-forming cloud RCW 120 has revealed an embryonic star, which appears ready to turn into one of the biggest and brightest stars in our galaxy within the next few hundred thousand years. It already contains eight to 10 times the mass of the sun and is still surrounded by an additional 2,000 solar masses of gas and dust from which it can feed further.

"This star can only grow bigger," says Annie Zavagno, Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille in France. Massive stars are rare and short-lived. To catch one during formation presents a golden opportunity to solve a long-standing paradox in astronomy. "According to our current understanding, you should not be able to form stars larger than eight solar masses," says Zavagno.

Herschel is a European Space Agency cornerstone mission, with science instruments provided by consortia of European institutes and with important participation by NASA. NASA's Herschel Project Office is based at JPL. JPL contributed mission-enabling technology for two of Herschel's three science instruments. The NASA Herschel Science Center, part of the Infrared Processing and Analysis Center at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, supports the United States astronomical community. Caltech manages JPL for NASA.
